Process Description
Hypersonic flame (HVOF) spraying uses oxygen and fuel to form a flammable mixture. Liquid fuel HVOF (HVOF-LF) typically uses liquid kerosene as fuel. Gas fuel HVOF (HVOF-GF) uses gas such as propylene, propane, hydrogen or natural gas (methane). The fuel is mixed with oxygen in the gun and the mixture is burned and ejected through the nozzle at supersonic speeds. Nitrogen is usually used as the carrier gas to feed the raw materials into the spray gun in powder form. When the powder exits the spray gun, the ignited gas surrounds and evenly heats the powder material and pushes it to the surface of the workpiece
Due to the high kinetic energy transferred to the powder particles, the powder feedstock usually does not need to be completely melted. Produces coatings with predictable chemical uniformity and good pellet structure.
The JP-5000 HVOF gun
The JP-5000 HVOF gun is designed for the liquid-fuel HVOF spray process and can be considered as the benchmark for HVOF guns. Robust, long-lasting components are used throughout, ensuring long spray runs and low maintenance requirements.
The JP-5000 liquid-fuel HVOF gun is a proven design using economical kerosene fuel to generate high quality, dense, wear resistance and/or corrosion-resistant coatings. Coatings can be applied very thick and exhibit favourable compressive stresses that increase bond strength and coating performance. The JP-5000 design is simple, rugged, featuring durable, long service life components that can withstand the harshest industrial spray environments, reliably and repeatedly.
The JP-5000 is designed for liquid-fuel (kerosene) and oxygen operation. Fuel and oxygen are fed into the gun, atomized by the coaxial stabilizer and ignited in the combustion chamber, resulting in a supersonic flame. Spray powder from the powder feeder is fed radially into the supersonic flame through two powder ports positioned directly after the combustion chamber. The spray stream is accelerated through a converging/diverging nozzle several times the speed of sound. The spray particles are heated to a molten or semi-molten state and propelled at high velocity, impacting the coating surface in a plastic state.
Several barrel lengths (4, 6 and 8 in) are available to optimize the dwell time of the spray particles in the jet stream while keeping the dwell time of the particle to a minimum.
Liquid fuel HVOF offers certain advantages over gas fuel processes, such as the easy availability and handling of fuel, and higher energy density associated with these fuels. The increased quantity of heat available results in denser coatings with higher bond strengths.

Advantages of plasma spray nozzles and electrodes produced by our company:
1. Our company has been engaged in the production of pure tungsten and tungsten alloy materials for many years, and has an in-depth understanding of the structure and properties of materials. For the tungsten electrode used in plasma spraying electrodes, based on our full understanding of the application, we have made more improvements and treatments to the material structure to meet the material requirements of plasma spraying. By densifying the tungsten electrode, a finer, more uniform grain structure is formed. The modified tungsten alloy has relatively high hardness and density, fast arc starting, excellent resistance to arc burning loss, and long life.
2. Our company's plasma spraying electrodes and nozzles use unique back-casting technology to achieve seamless bonding between tungsten and copper. The bonding strength can be as high as 127MPa, while the traditional bonding strength is less than 100MPa. Compared with traditional brazing, joints made by back-casting have higher bonding strength between tungsten and copper, larger contact area, more uniform resistance, and stronger heat dissipation ability, making the nozzle and electrode more stable and more durable as well as long service life.
3. We produce tungsten electrodes of different materials (good arc starting performance and ablation resistance). Based on customer usage conditions, we can provide more suitable materials for customers to choose.
